“Any musician can play a song they already know. So how about you play me a song you don’t know?” These were the words of Paul Bley, the legendary avant-garde jazz composer/bandleader.

Before Mr. Bley passed away in 2016, he issued that challenge to his son-in-law, Orion Palmer, who is a composer, drummer, and one third of the band Thesis Heists.

Songs We Don't Know is Thesis Heists' response to the late Paul Bley's challenge - the band improvised and wrote all seven songs in real-time in the studio.

"Sometimes we would start with an idea in mind, but more often than not, we were flying blind. We would hit record, start playing, and see what happened. This album is what happened.” said Orion Palmer, drummer.

“The heartfelt conversations I have with the guys in the band are one of my favorite things in the world,” says Amar Sastry, guitarist for Thesis Heists. “Why can’t instrumental songwriting be as fun and spontaneous?”

Now to spin this and take flight. As a former card carrying member of jamband scene this would have fit nicely back in the late 60's-70's and the late 90's-00's when improvisational jams were king. This is going to take the scene into another direction with Garcia Peoples. Vinyl Purchased 10/3/20. Arrived 10/26/20. The Midnight Toker.
